AURA — What We Cannot Change Out Of.

We can change our clothes.
But we cannot change out of the person wearing them.

For more than twenty-four years, I have chosen clothes and stood in the shop at Alto e Diritto.
Black leather and fine tailoring can transform a person’s appearance.
The more I understand that power, the more I recognise what clothing alone cannot provide.

Sometimes, we sense who a person is before we notice what they are wearing.
It is not a question of eloquence or reticence.
It is what they have chosen, what they have refused, and how they have lived with those decisions.
Their doubts and contradictions settle, layer upon layer, into the way they carry themselves.

Perhaps an aura is the record of a life that no performance can entirely conceal.

When we construct ourselves for the eyes of others,
what we protect gradually shifts from how we live to how we are perceived.
We become subordinate to their approval—spectators of our own lives.
That puts things in the wrong order.

I do not want my clothes to be the only thing I put in order before I stand in the shop.
