品 — Grace —

品とは、目立つものではない。

高価な持ち物でも、
完璧な振る舞いでもない。
むしろ、何気ない瞬間にだけ
静かに滲むものだと思う。

話を最後まで聞くこと。
物を乱暴に扱わないこと。
声を張らずとも、
相手にきちんと届くように話すこと。
そのひとつひとつに、
生き方は隠せずに出る。

人はそこで感じる。
この人は、ちゃんとしてる、と。

それは作法の問題ではない。
誰かに大切に扱われた記憶や、
自分もまた雑に生きまいとした時間が、
所作の奥に沈んでいるからだ。

品とは、飾りではない。
積み重ねた時間が、
沈黙の中で証明してしまう人格の輪郭だ。

Grace is not something that stands out.

It is not expensive possessions,
nor flawless behavior.
Rather, it is something that quietly seeps through
only in the most unguarded moments.

Listening until the other person has finished.
Not handling things roughly.
Speaking in a way that reaches the other person
without ever having to raise one’s voice.
In each of these small gestures,
the way one has lived cannot help but appear.

And that is when people feel it.
This person is proper.

It is not merely a matter of manners.
It is the memory of having once been treated with care,
and the long discipline of refusing
to live carelessly oneself,
settled deep within one’s gestures.

Grace is not decoration.
It is the outline of a person,

by the accumulation of time.
