Some beautiful things
require destruction before they can be complete.
Cut. Inlaid. Passed through fire.
Then cut again.
It is less an act of decoration
than an intervention into the material itself.
After passing through irreversible process after irreversible process,
only the traces permitted to remain are left.
Technique or craft.
Art or obsession.
That boundary has long since ceased to exist.
Techniques passed down through generations
are brought into existence once again, in the present, by the hands of craftsmen.
Follow one object deeply enough,
and eventually, you are no longer looking at the object alone.
From a single number, to a city.
From craft, to an era.
From an era, to the world.
More than a century and a half ago,
the world was beginning to gather in one place.
History once unknown
begins to connect through a world small enough to rest in the palm of a hand.
There is another kind of pleasure
in possessing an object.
Ten in the world.
That number
does not exist to explain rarity.
Its very existence
lies outside ordinary measures.
Reason.
Efficiency.
Reproducibility.
The density that remains
after refusing them all, to the very end.
No hierarchy of excellence
can measure the extremity of this work.
The moment you think you understand it,
it is already somewhere else.
