— KINDNESS, UNASKED. —

KINDNESS, UNASKED.
I lost a bracelet that meant a great deal to me.
The convenience store, the parking lot, the shop.
The entire distance between them was less than 100 meters.
On the way home, I realized it was no longer on my right wrist.
My longtime comrade went back with me.
We searched the shop, the parking lot, even the road.
It wasn’t his bracelet, yet he searched for it as desperately as I did.
Still, we couldn’t find it.
“Well, it is what it is.
Maybe it’s telling me to wear something even better.”
I laughed, and that night we went out for yakiniku to clear my head.
After I mentioned it on Instagram Stories,
messages came from people who genuinely felt bad for me.
The fact that they cared as if it had happened to them
made me deeply happy.
The next day, I stopped by my usual convenience store.
The manager came over and spoke to me.
I hadn’t asked him to check anything,
but he had gone out of his way to look into what happened.
“When you came in around three,
it was still on your right wrist.”
The moment I heard that,
the bracelet itself mattered less than the thought behind those words.
It was a place I stopped by without thinking,
said hello, bought what I needed, and left.
And yet, there were people there
who had cared about what happened even when I wasn’t around.
That meant more to me than I can properly say.
Losing something important should have made it a disappointing day.
But when I look back now,
I remember the face of my comrade, the messages that reached me,
and the kindness of everyone at that convenience store.
The bracelet never came back.
Still, whenever I think of that day,
the kindness I encountered remains far greater
than the thing I lost.
