滞在の倫理 II — 信用の負託

誰かに紹介された相手を、自分の「人脈」と呼ぶ。
そこには、見過ごせない錯誤がある。
紹介は、信用の譲渡ではない。

二十四年以上、洋服屋を続けてきた。
長い付き合いの人が、別の誰かを連れてきてくれる。
そこには、紹介者が積み重ねてきた信用が介在している。
こちらが受け取ったのは、名前ではなく、その判断に応える責任だ。

誰を知っているかを誇り、その名前で別の扉を開く。
関係を権威へ換算するのは容易い。
だが、そこで摩耗するのは自分の評判だけではない。
紹介してくれた人の信用まで、知らぬ間に削っている。

預かった信用は、そのまま自分の信用にはならない。
紹介者のいない場所で、目の前の人にどう向き合うか。
その所作を重ねて初めて、関係は誰の肩書にも依存しなくなる。

滞在とは、知り合いの数を増やすことではない。
紹介者の名前を出さなくても、また店の扉が開く。
その往来に、初めて轍が残る。

To call someone part of your “network”
simply because you were introduced is a misconception.
An introduction is not a transfer of trust.

For more than twenty-four years,
I have worked in the clothing business.
Longtime customers sometimes bring someone new.
Behind each introduction lies years of earned trust.
What I receive is not a name, but a responsibility.

To use another’s name to open doors
is to turn a relationship into borrowed authority.
What suffers is not only your own reputation,
but the credibility of the one who introduced you.

The trust placed in you does not become your own.
What matters is how you conduct yourself
when the person who introduced you is absent.
Only then can a relationship stand on its own.

Staying is not about accumulating connections.
When the shop door opens again,
without the need to invoke another person’s name,
a lasting trace is finally left behind.
