Chapter 4 — The Place That Never Changed. / 変わらなかった店。

存在しなかった記憶。
九〇年代の終わり頃。
ある日。
見覚えのある背中が、
静かに階段を上がってきた。
一年ぶりだったのか。
もっと長い時間が、
流れていたのか。
男は、
数えなかった。
重たい扉が開く。
ベルは鳴らない。
革と木と珈琲の香りだけが、
静かに迎えた。
男は、
何も言わない。
訪れた人も、
何も言わない。
その沈黙だけは、
あの日と、
何ひとつ変わっていなかった。
窓から射し込む午後の光。
古い木の床。
ゆっくりと流れる時間。
あの頃と同じ場所に、
あの頃と同じ空気があった。
変わったのは、
店ではない。
訪れた人だった。
少しだけ、
大人になった。
少しだけ、
疲れた顔をしていた。
少しだけ、
守るものが増えていた。
男は、
理由を聞かない。
近況も聞かない。
ただ、
以前とは違う一着を、
静かに差し出した。
「こちらも、
いいと思います。」
それだけだった。
人は、
歳を重ねる。
仕事も変わる。
住む街も変わる。
大切な人も変わる。
けれど、
変わらない場所が、
ひとつだけあると、
人は、
また前を向ける。
帰り際。
男は、
カウンター越しに、
小さく頷いた。
訪れた人も、
小さく頷いた。
言葉は、
最後まで必要なかった。
重たい扉が閉まる。
階段を降りる足音が、
少しだけ軽く聞こえた。
街は、
何も変わらないまま、
今日を続けている。
店もまた、
何も変わらないまま、
明日を待っている。
だから今日もまた、
誰かが、
あの階段を上がってくる。
変わらない店へではない。
変わらない自分を、
思い出すために。
A memory that never existed.
Toward the end of the 1990s.
One day.
A familiar silhouette
quietly climbed the stairs.
Had it been a year?
Or had
much more time passed?
The man
never counted.
The heavy door opened.
No bell rang.
Only the scent of leather,
wood, and coffee
welcomed the visitor in silence.
The man
said nothing.
The visitor
said nothing.
Only the silence
was exactly the same
as it had been that day.
The afternoon light
through the window.
The old wooden floor.
Time,
flowing without haste.
The place
had not changed.
Neither had
the air that filled it.
The one who had changed
was not the shop.
It was the visitor.
A little older.
A little more tired.
With a little more
to protect.
The man
asked no questions.
He did not ask
how life had been.
He simply
lifted a different jacket
from the rack
and quietly said,
“I think this one
might suit you too.”
That was all.
People change.
Years pass.
Work changes.
Cities change.
The people we love
change too.
But when there is
one place
that never changes,
it becomes possible
to keep moving forward.
As the visitor
prepared to leave,
the man
gave a small nod
from behind the counter.
The visitor
returned the gesture.
Words
were never needed.
The heavy door closed.
The footsteps
descending the stairs
felt just a little lighter.
Outside,
the city
carried on
as though nothing had changed.
The shop,
unchanged as always,
quietly waited
for tomorrow.
And so, even today,
someone
climbs those stairs.
Not to return
to the same shop.
But to remember
the part of themselves
that had never changed.
